Gordon Moore Theory and Digitalization
The circulation of this word in recent times and years has been more than many. The word is heard so much more than the understanding of what this actually means and opens up a very vast and interesting journey, which is changing our world and will continue to do so.
Somehow all of a sudden everything is leading to or connected to digitalization and gives us an opportunity window to learn and know more.
Is it about computers, computing power, connected network, smartphones and digital devices?
In 1965, engineer Gordon Moore famously predicted that the number of transistors on integrated circuits would double every year for the next decade. He later revised that to doubling every two years. More than half a century later, this trend continues despite predictions that Moore's Law cannot last much longer. The advancement shows that the computing power is almost doubling every year, this is exceptional growth and a strong basis for growth of Digitalization.
A very strong network, powerful computing and digital devices are essentially the basis for Digitalization which will make the analog world look like yesterday and is feeling the heat of disruption.
When it comes to imagining the future, we usually extrapolate statistically based on past trends and expect that in future it will grow at the same trend and speed, as a matter of fact, in this case, it does not!
If you compare the development of 20 years between 1980 to 2000 to that of 2000 to 2020, the leaps made between 2000 to 2020 were unimaginable by any kind of predictive scaling model. The changes in digitalization during this period has been overwhelming, for example your smartphone is a digital dairy, a camera, a navigation tool, a music system, a television, a watch, a calendar and the list goes on and on.
Digitalization is not only dependent on ever growing computing power, but it allows you to create, modify, alter, edit, delete, while keeping everything local, all kinds of information in digital form, everything remains local and with local effects. Imagine the journey from music cassettes to Spotify! Could you have ever imagined this?
